Kuningattaren siltatyömaa The Queen’s Brigde Site Galleria Uusi Kipinä, Kulma, Lahti, Finland, 5th – 23rd August 2026, opening 4th August 6 – 8 p.m.
Pitkäaikainen kiinnostukseni erilaisia rakennus- ja tietyömaiden työkoneita kohtaan on muodostunut kuningatarhahmojen rinnalla keskeiseksi osaksi työskentelyäni. Näyttelyn teoksia ja niiden syntytarinoita yhdistää erilaiset kaivamiseen liittyvät teemat. Noin 30 vuotta käyttämälläni, edelleen muuntuvalla fiktiivisellä (Irlannin) kuningatarhahmolla on vihreät silmät ja jättiläismäiset sivunutturat. Hahmoissa on jälkiä enemmän tai vähemmän arkisesta jumalattarien ja kuningatarten taidehistoriasta esimerkiksi Neitsyt Mariaan ja Maria Magdalenaan. Liitän teokseen Kuningatar ja rintalapsi / The Queen and the Infant (2026) kuningatar-äidin leveän kellohameen oopperasalin katsomon parvien kaarimuotoon. Lapsi kaivaa äitinsä rintaa ja taputtaa sitä käsillään.
Näyttelyn kaikki teokset ovat öljymaalauksia kankaalle. Maalaan valmistamallani hartsipitoisella maalausnesteellä erilaisia kerroksia. Levitän maalia siveltimillä ja pyyhin pintoja rievulla – ja se on myös kaivamista. Värit ja maalausliikkeen jäljet ovat keinojani yhdistää kevyt ja painava. Käytän paljon aikaa maalaamiseen ja siihen liittyvään ajatteluun. Valmiissa teoksessa voi olla vierekkäin paksuja, ohuita, peittäviä, kuultavia, ei-kiiltäviä ja kiiltäviä värejä. En tee siihen kauttaaltaan yhtenäisen kiillon tuovaa lakkamaista loppuvernissausta.
My long-standing interest in various types of the machines on construction and road construction sites has, alongside my “queen” character, become a central part of my work. The works in this exhibition and the stories behind their creation are linked by the theme of digging. The fictional (Irish) queen character I’ve been using for about 30 years – and who continues to evolve – has green eyes and gigantic side buns. The figures bear more or less everyday traces from the art history of goddesses and queens, such as the Virgin Mary and the Mary Magdalene. In the work The Queen and the Infant (2026), I associate the queen-mother’s wide bell-shaped skirt with the arched form of the balconies in an opera house auditorium. The child buries their face in their mother’s breast and pats it with their hands.
All works in the exhibition are oil paintings on canvas. I paint various layers using a resin-based painting medium I have prepared myself. I apply paint with brushes and wipe the surface with a rag – and that, too, is a form of digging. Colors and the traces of my brushstrokes are my means of combining the light and the heavy. I spend a lot of time painting and thinking about it. In a finished work, thick, thin, opaque, translucent, matte, and glossy colors may appear side by side. I do not apply a varnish-like final coat that creates a uniform gloss across the entire surface.
